As writers online, we concentrate on a lot of things like producing quality content, generating traffic, monetizing, SEO, etc. We have to because these are the vital aspects to be considered when moving ahead with our writing career. Keeping aside the major ones, there are small add-ons to be considered which could give a boost on your writing skills. One of them being Your Typing Speed.
Hardly any one of us cares about what our typing speed is. Why should we until we are able to deliver quality content? At some point, I do agree. But let me illustrate you an example. You have the most delicious food served to you and all the ingredients in it are perfectly blended except the fact that the salt added is less. You are able to enjoy the food still but an addition of a pinch of salt would have made it the most perfect dish. Good typing speed is like the pinch of salt. Your dish will still be good without it but if added, the flavor would come out extraordinarily.
I had a speed of around 20-22 words per minute when I began writing online. Those were the days when I hardly managed writing one article per day. The reason: By the time I completed one article (say around 1000 words), I was too tired struggling myself with the keyboard. Although I had ideas for yet another article, I wouldn’t take it up for the fear of struggling myself with the typing yet again. Right now my typing speed falls between 30-35 words per minute and I easily manage writing 2 articles per day and that too without much struggle.
You can see my typing speed has helped me a lot in increasing my efficiency towards writing more. If you find the above view justified, here are some reasons I give you as to why you should think about working on it:
You can write more content spending the same time:
Imagine someone having a typing speed of around 60 words per minute. How easy will it be for him/her to write 4-5 articles per day……….. And guess what? He/she would almost take the same time as someone having a typing speed of 20-22 words per minute will take, considering that both of them produce the same quality. So higher typing speed means more content can be produced. Even if you plan of writing only 1 article/per day, you will not get engaged for the entire day and you will have ample time to carry out your other stuffs.
It will boost up your productivity:
We feel ourselves to be more productive if we perform better than the average. A ‘Do it Average’ attitude does not get you going anywhere. Productivity is all about doing more in less time. It is the sense of productivity which keeps you going. You are energetic and enthusiastic only when you find yourself to be productive enough. When you find that you are performing better than the average in a particular job, you get interested in it and work forward. Alternatively, when you start gaining benefits in a lesser time, you delve yourself into it.
The earlier you finish your writing, the more time you will have for yourself:
Earning money or pursuing your job is not all that you have in your life. You have other activities too to take care of. You might want to spend time with your family, spend a relaxed evening or pursue a hobby. So, how can you accomplish all that? It is only when you are done with your daily job. If writing is your career or you earn a living through writing most of the time, you should master this skill to concentrate on the other things in life. If you are a part time writer, you still need to work on this skill to enjoy the other aspects.
It helps you earn more:
If you have been reading the above paragraphs, you might agree that having a good typing speed is one way (although minor) to increase your earnings. If you are productive and can write more content in a lesser time, there is no denying the fact that you have in a way worked on increasing your earning, devoting the same time as usual. A better earning makes you more satisfied and happy on a professional front.
Mastering a skill is always a good thing:
Having a good Typing Speed is one of the commanding skills in your writing career. It is one thing that you develop through constant practice and a thing that can be easily mastered. You need not devote too much of time for it. Although as you keep on writing more and more online, your typing speed keeps on improving. But if you want to improve on it on a much faster pace, then it is worth giving a shot.
